What is Reiki?

Reiki is a divine healing energy that works on the bodies natural energy system. It is always safe it can do no harm. It is known to be a universal life force that will go directly to where it is most needed (the therapist only being a channel to direct the energy) thus not only deals with the problem at hand but also deals with the cause of the problem. Reiki differs from other healing systems by the practioner being "attuned" with healing symbols. Only those with training from a Reiki Master and attunement are able to offer Reiki Healing. As with all healing systems it is the "intention" to give love and help that is important. Remember your body is capable of healing itself - given the extra energy boost it gives the normal body functions more strength to heal faster. It is you that heals itself not the therapist! It does help for you to think positively about the healing to give open access to mind, body and spirit.

Healing has been proven to work by doctors and scientists who have used group studies to try and test whether or not direct and indeed distance healing really works. Through the love of one another we can all heal by hands on touch. At a basic level we have a surrounding energy field that is activated by one another - just as magnets are attracted to each other. It works by energizing the enzymes with our body to work at accelerated rates: thus speeding up the healing process.

To take healing up a level Reiki and many other types of healing work not only on the body but on the higher body's invisible protective shield (known by most as the aura). Before physical illness it is this shield that becomes disfunctional and less protective (due to enivornmental elements and emotional upsets). Then our defenses become open due to damage and illness begins. Reiki works on these higher levels as well as the physical body.

What to expect from a Reiki treatment

A Reiki Treatment is tremendously relaxing. There is no need for the removal of any clothing - it is a completely non invasive treatment. You will be required to lay on a couch and I will cover you to keep you warm and comfortable. I will then begin treatment by soft and gentle placing of hands on your body in a routine way beginning on the shoulders and slowly traveling down to the feet. On each area I touch I may stay with for a couple of minutes or so. An area requiring attention will take the longest time. If touch is a problem to you I am quite happy to hover above your body and the effect is just the same.

For specific problems it may be more suitable to direct energy to one or two areas and may only be a 20 minute session, but, on a more frequent basis.

Reiki is suitable for all ages including children and animals (see below section on animals).

Were did Reiki come from?

Dr. Makao Usui was born on 15^th August 1864 in the village of Yango in the Yamagata district of Japan. As a young man enjoyed reading and studied much about medicine, psychology, astrology and different religions before becoming a teacher himself.

It was through the study of Buddhism he wondered how the healing powers of Buddha and his disciples had been lost. By visiting Buddhist temples he found meditation may have the answers and set to do just that on a 21 day fast at mount Kori-yama. On this mountain he counted the days with 21 stones. Each new day a stone was cast away. Now sometimes it takes a very physical action to make us see the way forward. With Dr. Usui it was the last stone cast into the air..... When he threw it he saw a bright light which was to contain the Reiki message for him and he had to decide to accept it or not. He accepted it and it came at him entering his Third Eye which knocked him unconscious. It was at that moment Dr. Usui saw, not stars, but the Symbols that that have been handed down through the generations known to give healing properties.

The origins of Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a form of healing shrouded in the mists of time. If you believe in the ancient civilisation of Atlantis (and many people do) it was thought that Reiki was used there. Reiki was lost with Atlantis but its knowledge was written about in Tibetan books over 2,500 years ago. In fact its roots may have gone even further back to the sunken continent called Lemuria.
